Smart STB IPTV Setup Guide for Samsung & LG Smart TVs

By wobbo iptv

Smart STB is a paid app for Samsung, LG and a handful of other smart TVs that makes the TV behave like a MAG set-top box. Instead of sideloading an Android player, you give your IPTV provider the app's virtual MAC address, enter the provider's portal URL in the app, and the TV loads live channels, the program guide (EPG) and video on demand exactly the way a MAG box would. The newer Smart STB+ build also accepts a plain M3U playlist, which removes the MAC step entirely.

This guide walks through the whole process in order: installing the app, finding the virtual MAC, activating the license, getting a WOBBO line that Smart STB can use (portal or M3U), adding it in the app, and fixing the error messages people actually run into. Nothing here needs a payment to test — the free 24-hour trial supports MAG, M3U and Xtream lines, so you can confirm Smart STB works on your TV before you buy either the app license or a subscription.

The short version

  1. Install Smart STB from your TV's app store (Smart STB+ on Samsung TVs from 2020 onward and LG webOS 3 or newer; the classic app on older Samsung models).
  2. Open System settings → Device info and note the Virtual MAC (it starts with 00:1A:79).
  3. Start the free 7-day app trial at smart-stb.net, then pick a license when it ends.
  4. Order a WOBBO line as MAG Device (enter that virtual MAC) or as M3U Playlist — the free trial offers both.
  5. In the app: System settings → Portals → Multiportal mode ON → Use Portal 1 ON, paste the portal or playlist URL, save with the green key, set it as the default portal.

How a Smart STB portal connection works: the app identifies itself with a virtual MAC, the portal URL points it at the provider, and channels, guide and VOD flow back.

What Smart STB is — and what it is not

Definition: Smart STB is a set-top-box emulator app. It reproduces the software side of a MAG box (the "Stalker" or "Ministra" portal interface) on a smart TV, so any IPTV provider that can activate MAG boxes can activate your TV the same way. The developer describes it as the first "set-top app" and a replacement for the separate box.

Three things trip people up, so they are worth stating plainly:

  • It contains no channels. The app license and the TV subscription are two separate purchases. Smart STB's own pricing page states that it does not offer or provide any TV services, streams or playlists. Your IPTV provider supplies the portal or playlist.
  • It identifies your TV by a virtual MAC, not by a username. With a portal (MAG) line there is no login screen. The provider registers your virtual MAC on their side, and the app is recognised the moment it reaches the portal URL.
  • Smart STB and Smart STB+ are not the same build. Smart STB+ is the current app for Samsung TVs made in 2020 or later and for LG TVs on webOS 3 or newer. It supports both portals and M3U playlists, with improved playlist handling (channel logos, EPG and categories). Older Samsung models get the classic Smart STB; on that build, a portal line is the dependable choice.

Do you need Smart STB at all? Portal vs M3U vs Xtream on Samsung and LG

Samsung Tizen and LG webOS cannot sideload Android APKs, so the choice is between the apps in the TV's own store. Smart STB is the right tool when you want the MAG-style experience (a portal-driven channel list with guide and VOD, no typing of credentials on the TV). It is not the only option, and for some households an Xtream-login app is simpler. This is how the three approaches compare with a WOBBO line:

ApproachApps on Samsung / LGWhat you enterWOBBO line type to choose
Portal (MAG emulation)Smart STB, Smart STB+Portal URL only — your virtual MAC identifies the TVMAG Device (enter the virtual MAC at checkout)
M3U playlistSmart STB+ (full M3U support), Smart IPTV (SIPTV), Set IPTV, Net IPTV, Flix IPTV, Duplex PlayA single playlist link (some apps want it uploaded on the app's website against the TV's MAC)M3U Playlist
Xtream Codes loginIPTV Smarters ProServer URL, username and passwordXtream Codes (the default, best for most apps)

A practical rule: if you already own a MAG box or you like the MAG interface, use Smart STB with a portal line. If you just want the channels on the TV with the least setup, IPTV Smarters Pro with an Xtream login is hard to beat — our IPTV Smarters Pro setup guide covers it in five steps. Every WOBBO plan carries the same catalogue — 45,000+ live channels, 38,000+ movies and 9,600+ series — whichever line type you pick, so the decision is purely about the app you prefer.

Step 1 — Install Smart STB on your TV

Open the app store on the TV (Samsung Apps on Tizen, the LG Content Store on webOS), search for Smart STB and install it. On a Samsung TV from 2020 onward and on LG webOS 3+, the listing is Smart STB+; older Samsung sets are offered the classic app. Launch it and accept the disclaimer. Until a portal is configured, the app loads a demo portal — that is normal and confirms the install worked.

Smart STB's site also lists builds for Android TV, Apple TV, Fire TV, Philips and Vewd-based TVs. On Fire TV and Android, though, a native player such as TiviMate is usually the better choice — see how to set up TiviMate on a Fire TV Stick.

Step 2 — Find your virtual MAC address

Open the app, dismiss the disclaimer, then press OK (the centre button) to open the menu. Go to System settings → Device info. The Virtual MAC is shown in the middle of that screen, in the form 00:1A:79:XX:XX:XX.

Two details matter here:

  • The same screen shows a Software ID. That one is for managing your app license at smart-stb.net. The Virtual MAC is what you give to your IPTV provider. Do not mix them up.
  • Write the MAC down exactly. It is what WOBBO's checkout asks for on a MAG line, and the form validates the prefix — a Smart STB virtual MAC begins with 00:1A:79, and the form also accepts the real-box prefix 00:1E:B8.

Smart STB's knowledge base explicitly advises against changing the virtual MAC. If the MAC changes after your provider has registered it, the portal stops recognising the TV.

Step 3 — Activate the app: trial first, then a license

The app starts with a 7-day free trial that requires no payment. Log in at smart-stb.net (My Account), enter the Software ID from the Device info screen — or type the activation code the app shows you — and start the trial; the site asks for a billing address but takes no payment. When the trial ends, you choose a license. At the time of writing the official price list for smart TVs is:

LicensePrice (smart TVs)DevicesCustom portals
Lite€6.99 per year1 (extra devices are a paid add-on)1
Full — monthly€1.99 per monthUp to 5 (4 extra at no cost)Multiple
Full — annual€14.99 per yearUp to 5Multiple
Full — lifetime€24.99 one-timeUp to 5Multiple
Full — unlimited€49.99 one-timeUp to 5Multiple

Prices are set by the app developer, not by WOBBO, and can change — check smart-stb.net before paying. Two policies to know in advance: app payments are non-refundable, and a license covers the app only. Each TV still needs its own IPTV subscription on the portal.

Which tier? If you have one TV and one provider, Lite is enough. If you want Smart STB on several TVs, the Full license's four extra device slots make it cheaper than four Lite licenses. Remember that each TV has its own virtual MAC: on portal lines every MAC has to be registered separately, while an M3U playlist can be loaded on as many TVs as your plan has connections — Duo, Family and Max allow 2, 4 and 5 simultaneous streams.

Step 4 — Get a WOBBO line that Smart STB can load

Start with the free 24-hour trial — full access, no payment details, one per customer — or go straight to a plan. Both forms ask for the line type, and two of the three options work with Smart STB:

Option A — portal line (MAG Device)

Choose MAG Device and enter the virtual MAC from Step 2 in the Device MAC address field. The line is activated on that MAC, so the TV is recognised without any login. Your portal URL is sent by email once the line is active and stays visible in your account dashboard (see where to find your subscription credentials).

Option B — M3U playlist (Smart STB+)

Choose M3U Playlist and you receive a single playlist link instead of a portal. Paste it into the same URL field in Step 5. This route skips MAC registration altogether, which also means you can move the playlist to another app later without asking support to re-register anything. If you already hold an Xtream line, support can send you its playlist link — it is the same line.

Whichever option you choose, the subscription itself is identical: every channel package, 4K where the source broadcasts it, and no auto-renewal.

Step 5 — Add the portal or M3U playlist in Smart STB

These are the developer's own steps, and they are the same on Samsung and LG:

  1. Start the app. When you see Loading Portal, press OK (centre key).
  2. Open System settings → Portals.
  3. Set Multiportal mode to ON.
  4. Set Use Portal 1 to ON.
  5. Enter a name and paste your portal URL (or the M3U playlist URL) in the URL field.
  6. Save with the green key on the remote. On remotes without colour keys, press Back/Return and confirm with OK.
  7. Set Portal 1 as the Default portal, then choose Reboot application so it loads on every start.

Type the URL exactly as delivered — http:// or https:// included, no spaces before or after. If typing on the TV is painful, Smart STB's website has a Change portals page that pushes the URL to the TV using a QR code or settings code instead.

Note for Lite licenses: they store only one custom portal. Full licenses can keep several, which is handy if you run more than one provider or want a backup entry.

Step 6 — First load: channels, guide and VOD

On a portal line the TV pulls the channel list, the EPG and the movie and series libraries from the portal on first start; allow a minute for the guide to fill. On an M3U playlist in Smart STB+, channels, logos and categories come from the playlist and the guide from the EPG source attached to it. If the guide stays empty or shows the wrong times, the fixes in EPG guide empty, incomplete or wrong times apply to Smart STB just as they do to other apps.

For stable playback, wire the TV to the router with an ethernet cable where you can. Smart STB's own support page for the "Loading Portal" problem recommends a cable connection over Wi-Fi, and our buffering guide gives the speeds to aim for: 15 Mbps for HD and 25 Mbps for 4K, measured at the TV.

Watching from Canada? Plan the VPN before the app

WOBBO works in Canada only through a VPN, and a smart TV is the one device that cannot run a VPN app itself — Samsung Tizen and LG webOS do not allow it. For Smart STB that leaves one option that keeps the app on the TV: run the VPN on your router, so every device in the house is covered. The alternative is to plug a Fire TV Stick or Android box into the TV and use a player there instead of Smart STB. Both routes are explained in our free VPN setup guide. Set this up before you test, because a portal that cannot be reached shows up as the "Loading Portal" message below, not as a VPN warning.

Troubleshooting: the messages you may see

Each of these is documented by Smart STB's own knowledge base. The table tells you who needs to act — you, WOBBO support, or the app developer.

MessageWhat it meansWhat to do
"Please contact your provider to register this device"The portal does not recognise this virtual MAC — usually because another app (for example STBEmu) was used with the same MAC on the same portal, or the registration did not go through.Send the virtual MAC to WOBBO support. The line has to be deleted and re-created for that MAC. Then use only Smart STB with this MAC on this portal.
"Your STB is blocked. Call the provider"The provider has not activated this MAC yet, the MAC changed, or the line is inactive. Smart STB cannot unblock it — provider access is outside their control.Check the subscription is active in your dashboard; if it is, open a ticket with the virtual MAC so it can be re-registered.
Stuck on "Loading Portal"The TV cannot reach the portal: a wrong or mistyped URL, a weak connection, a proxy or VPN that is not working, or a provider-side outage.Re-check the URL character by character, switch to a wired connection, and in Canada confirm the router VPN is up. Then contact support if it persists.
Only the demo portal loads (licensed app)The app was reset, the Software ID changed (new TV, hard reset, network change), or the license is on hold.Re-enter the portal (Step 5), set it as default and reboot the app. If the Software ID changed, use "Transfer license" in your smart-stb.net account.
"Firmware of your STB is outdated"A portal-version or redirect problem on the provider side, not a fault with your TV.Report it to support with the exact URL you entered; nothing on the TV needs updating.

If a message is not in the list, the generic rules from our login and playlist error guide still apply: an expired subscription renews from the dashboard with no app changes, and "maximum connections reached" means another device is using the line's stream slot.

One warning that follows from the table: do not run STBEmu and Smart STB with the same virtual MAC on the same portal. Smart STB's knowledge base names that exact situation as the cause of the "register this device" error.

Frequently asked questions

Is Smart STB free?

No. There is a 7-day free trial with no payment required; after that the app needs a license, starting at €6.99 per year for the Lite tier on smart TVs. The license never includes channels.

Does Smart STB work with an M3U playlist?

Smart STB+ does — the developer lists "portals or m3u playlists" as supported, with logos, EPG and categories for playlists. Enter the playlist link in the same URL field used for a portal. With WOBBO, order the line as M3U Playlist to receive that link.

What is a portal URL in IPTV?

A portal URL is the address of the provider's MAG-style middleware. A MAG box, Smart STB or STBEmu connects to it, presents its MAC address, and receives the channel list, guide and VOD catalogue for the subscription registered to that MAC. It replaces the username-and-password login used by Xtream-style apps.

Can I use Smart STB on two TVs with one subscription?

With an M3U playlist in Smart STB+, yes — load the same playlist on both TVs and pick a plan with enough simultaneous connections (Duo for two, Family for four, Max for five). With portal lines, each TV's virtual MAC has to be registered, so contact support before ordering and we will set the second TV up with you. The app side is separate: a Full license allows up to five devices.

Does WOBBO support Smart STB?

Yes. Choose MAG Device at checkout and enter the app's virtual MAC, or choose M3U Playlist for Smart STB+. Both options are available on the free 24-hour trial, so you can test the app on your TV before paying for anything.

Why does my virtual MAC start with 00:1A:79?

That prefix belongs to the block used by MAG set-top boxes. Smart STB generates its virtual MAC in the same range so that provider panels built for MAG hardware accept it. WOBBO's checkout checks for this prefix (and for 00:1E:B8, another MAG range) to catch typos before a line is created.

Can I change the virtual MAC?

The app allows it, but Smart STB's own documentation marks the procedure "not recommended". Any line already registered to the old MAC stops working until the provider re-registers the new one. If you must change it, send support the new MAC straight away.

Ready to try it on your TV?

The whole setup takes about fifteen minutes, and none of it has to be paid for up front: Smart STB's 7-day app trial and WOBBO's 24-hour subscription trial overlap comfortably. Start the free trial, choose MAG Device or M3U Playlist, and you will know within the hour whether Smart STB is the right fit for your Samsung or LG TV. When it is, pick a plan — Solo for one TV, Duo, Family or Max for the whole house — and your line simply continues. Stuck anywhere along the way? Contact support with your virtual MAC and we will sort it out.
