Best free VPN for streaming — setup guide

In some regions (Canada in particular), internet providers restrict IPTV traffic — so your subscription only works through a VPN. The good news: you do not need to pay for one. This guide sets you up with a genuinely free VPN in about five minutes, on every device you own.

Which free VPN — it depends on the device

On TV devices (Fire Stick, Android TV): use Proton VPN Free. It has official, remote-friendly apps in both the Amazon Appstore and the Android TV Play Store, unlimited data, and no ads. It needs a free account (an email address) — create one first at protonvpn.com.

On phones and computers: use Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 (WARP). Completely free, no data caps, no account at all — but note it has no official TV app, so keep it to phones, tablets and computers.

Amazon Fire Stick / Fire TV — Proton VPN Free

  1. Create your free account at protonvpn.com (phone or computer is easiest).
  2. On the Fire TV home screen, open Find → Search and type Proton VPN.
  3. Install the official Proton VPN app and open it.
  4. Sign in with your free account, pick a free server (US, NL or JP) and press Connect.
  5. Approve the VPN connection prompt — done. Leave it connected while you stream.

Android TV / Google TV box — Proton VPN Free

  1. Open the Google Play Store on the TV and search for Proton VPN.
  2. Install it, open it, and sign in with your free account.
  3. Choose a free server and press Connect, then approve the VPN prompt.

Cheap "Android box" that shows the normal phone Play Store (not the TV one)? Then it runs phone Android — you can install 1.1.1.1 + WARP from the Play Store instead and just flip its toggle on.

Android phone or tablet — 1.1.1.1 (WARP)

  1. Open the Google Play Store.
  2. Search for 1.1.1.1 + WARP (publisher: Cloudflare, Inc.) and install it.
  3. Open the app, accept the terms, and press the big toggle switch.
  4. Allow the VPN connection request when Android asks — that is it.

iPhone / iPad — 1.1.1.1 (WARP)

  1. Open the App Store and search for 1.1.1.1: Faster Internet.
  2. Install it, open it, and press the toggle to connect.
  3. iOS will ask to add a VPN configuration — tap Allow and confirm.

Windows PC or Mac — 1.1.1.1 (WARP)

  1. Go to one.one.one.one (yes, that is the real address) in your browser.
  2. Download the app for Windows or macOS and run the installer.
  3. Open it from the system tray (Windows) or menu bar (Mac) and switch the toggle on.

Smart TVs (Samsung / LG)

Samsung Tizen and LG webOS TVs cannot install VPN apps directly. Two easy options:

  1. Best: plug a Fire Stick or Android box into the TV and follow the sections above — the VPN runs on the stick, so the TV itself needs nothing.
  2. Advanced: run the VPN on your router so every device in the house is covered. Router setups vary — contact our support and we will point you to the right guide for your model.

Streaming feels slow? Change the protocol

Both apps can talk to the internet over different "protocols". If channels buffer or the connection drops, switching protocol usually fixes it:

  1. Proton VPN: open Settings → Protocol and switch between Smart, WireGuard and OpenVPN (UDP/TCP). On restrictive networks, Stealth often gets through when everything else fails.
  2. 1.1.1.1 (WARP): open Settings → Connection (on some versions Advanced → Connection options) and switch Protocol between WireGuard and MASQUE.
  3. After switching, turn the VPN off and on again, then retry your stream. Keep whichever runs smoother.

Quick checklist before you stream

  1. VPN app installed on the SAME device you watch on.
  2. It says Connected before you open your IPTV app.
  3. Buffering? Switch the protocol (section above) or try a different free server.

Want a VPN that just works, every evening?

Free VPNs are fine for getting started. If you would rather pay a few dollars a month for TV apps built for a remote, fast WireGuard servers and every device in the house on one account, read our recommendation: Private Internet Access — the VPN we recommend.
