Getting Started
Private Internet Access — the VPN we recommend
If you watch IPTV in a region where internet providers block streams (Canada in particular), a VPN app on your viewing device is what makes the channels play. Our free VPN guide covers the no-cost options. This article is for the other case: you want a VPN that simply works every evening, on every device in the house, without hunting for a free server — and you are happy to pay a few dollars a month for that.
Our pick is Private Internet Access (PIA) — privateinternetaccess.com. It has been around for well over ten years, which in the VPN world is a very long time, and it is the one our support team sees the fewest problems with.
Why PIA for IPTV
- Apps for the devices people actually watch on: Amazon Fire TV / Fire Stick, Android TV and Google TV, Android phones and tablets, iPhone and iPad, Windows, Mac and Linux. The TV apps are built for a remote — big buttons, one press to connect.
- One subscription, the whole house: PIA lets you run its app on all your devices at the same time under one account, so the Fire Stick in the bedroom and the box in the living room are both covered.
- Fast protocol for video: it supports WireGuard, the modern protocol that keeps 4K streams smooth. If a network blocks it, the app can fall back to OpenVPN.
- Servers close to home: pick a server in the United States (or any nearby country) and your streams take a short, fast route.
- Money-back window: PIA offers a refund period on new subscriptions, so you can test it with your IPTV line before you commit.
Prices, plan lengths and the exact refund terms change from time to time — always check the current offer on their website.
Amazon Fire Stick / Fire TV
- Buy your plan at privateinternetaccess.com (phone or computer is easiest). You will get a username and password.
- On the Fire TV home screen, open Find → Search and type Private Internet Access.
- Install the official PIA VPN app and open it.
- Sign in, choose a server (United States is a good default from Canada) and press the big Connect button.
- Approve the VPN connection prompt from Fire OS. Leave the app connected and open your IPTV app.
Android TV / Google TV box
- Open the Google Play Store on the TV and search for Private Internet Access.
- Install it, open it and sign in.
- Pick a server, press Connect, and approve the VPN prompt.
Android phone / tablet and iPhone / iPad
- Install Private Internet Access from the Play Store or the App Store.
- Sign in and press Connect. Android and iOS will ask to add a VPN configuration — allow it.
- Keep it connected while your IPTV app is open.
Windows PC or Mac
- Download the app from privateinternetaccess.com → Download and run the installer.
- Sign in, then connect from the system tray (Windows) or menu bar (Mac).
Smart TVs (Samsung / LG)
Samsung Tizen and LG webOS TVs cannot install VPN apps. Plug a Fire Stick or Android box into the TV and run PIA on that — or set PIA up on your router so every device in the house goes through it (PIA publishes router guides on its site).
Streams buffering? Two settings to try
- Protocol: in the app open Settings → Protocols and make sure WireGuard is selected. If your network blocks it, switch to OpenVPN.
- Server: choose a different city, or a country next door — closer is usually faster. Disconnect and reconnect after changing it.
Quick checklist before you stream
- PIA installed on the SAME device you watch on.
- It says Connected before you open your IPTV app.
- Buffering? Switch protocol or server (section above).
